I'm announcing it now- my 2016 project: KELZUKI'S ANIMAL KINGDOM! Each day of this year, I'll be illustrating a different species of animal. They'll be grouped by month into orders, and for January I'm starting with familiar territory: the order Passeriformes, aka the Passerines, aka "perching birds." This order encompasses most of the birds we call "songbirds" and more species than any other bird order. It's wide ranging and diverse, and choosing just 31 species to represent is going to be tricky, but I think it will be cool!
For each month's order, I'm hoping to identify and illustrate a wide variety of cool species, both familiar and unfamiliar. I'm absolutely not a scientist, but I'm hoping this project can turn me into some kind of Citizen Naturalist. I'm learning what I can through Wikipedia and the library, but if anyone reading this has suggestions on where to go for more information about the Passerines, or animals in general, please let me know!
I'm kicking the project off with the Yellow-throated vireo. These pretty guys sometimes travel to my neck of the woods (Minnesota, US) and I think they're just beautiful. Whenever a bird in the Midwest has coloring like this, it's a treat.
AND NOW SOME THOUGHTS ON THE NEW YEAR.
Before going out to dinner with Nick and spending some quality time with old friends in the evening, I spent my New Year's Eve day listening to Takk, rewatching Life of Mammals, and leaning into that wonderment that comes with the turning over of a new year. I love that it's a worldwide marker of time and that practically everyone you see on the street or in shops, restaurants, on NYE is celebrating the same event.
Things I'm hoping my 2016 is full of:
- NATURE- learning about, studying, discovering, experiencing
- MINDFULNESS- finding, embracing, and using to make choices more in line with my values (especially as far as the food and goods I purchase go)
- CREATING- making more and better work than last year, whether it's illustrations for others, personal work, paintings, wall hangings, knitting, or something new I haven't found yet
What else am I looking forward to? Well, I have lots of plans and hopes for what this site might become. I'm hoping to release a greeting card line early this year. And I'd really love to find a way to make more stuff with Nick, like the ornaments we collaborated on this holiday season. We have a couple trips planned that I'm already super excited for. And this summer will be our first with a yard, so hopefully I can get my black thumb to work and grow at least a small amount of produce and flowers.
I'll be writing and posting photos here on this blog. It's going to be a lot of overlong sentences that make up overlong posts, because I'm not really used to writing, especially blogging. And no promises about it being interesting, because most of it probably won't be. But I feel like this blog is pretty out of peoples' way so it's not like I'm shoving myself in peoples' faces. I just want to use this as a spot to collect and muse on the things I'm doing, making, and feeling!
